Ruth (Shiner) Allen

Ruth Shiner Allen, 99, of Bethlehem, passed peacefully from this world on Friday, July 2, 2021 in the care of Country Meadows, Bethlehem. She was the widow of Donald W. Allen. Born in Bethlehem, she was a daughter of the late Bertram and Mary Mae (Hess) Shiner. 

A native of Bethlehem, Ruth was employed by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation for 41 years.
Her career began as a typist in 1940 following graduation from Liberty High School and Bethlehem Business College. She was promoted to supervisor in the purchasing department in 1945, but will be remembered as one of the few female executives of her time when she was named supervisor of lobby services in the corporate division of the purchasing department in 1952. She was responsible for the escorts, receptionists, elevator operators and doormen at the firm’s home office complex. Ruth was the first woman to speak at the annual general meeting of the American Iron and Steel Institute in 1958. She retired in 1982 after a long successful career. 

Her interests included golf, travel, entertaining her friends and family and above all she cherished her nieces, nephews, grands and great-grands and loved them all as if they were her own. 

Ruth will be lovingly remembered by those many nieces and nephews and brother, Lanny Shiner (Joanne) of Macomb, MI. She was predeceased by siblings, Bertram Shiner, Marjorie Shiner
and Jean Batt. 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Cantelmi Long Funeral Home, 500 Linden St., Bethlehem PA where relatives and friends can call from 10:00 AM until the time of service. A memory tribute may be placed at www.cantelmifuneralhome.com.
