Noel Adams Obituary

Noel LaMotte Adams, 92, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, died on Sunday, January 7, 2024.

She was born on New Year’s Day of 1932 in New York City. Her parents were Lois and Louis Howell LaMotte. Her father was a key executive at IBM Corporation in the very early days of that company. In connection with her father’s work for IBM involving the U.S. Government, the family moved to Washington, DC, when she was 5.

Noel attended Sidwell Friends School there and, thereafter, she attended Bennett College and later Finch College, from which she graduated with a degree in Art and Design.

Following college, she married Frederick Werden Miles and they had three children, Linda, Frederick and Jennifer. They lived in Salisbury, Connecticut until his untimely death.

In 1972, she moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania when she married David Adams IV, who had a long career there as a senior executive with Bethlehem Steel Corporation. She and her husband also maintained residences at the Blooming Grove Hunting and Fishing Club in Hawley, Pennsylvania and in the Hilton Head area of South Carolina, where the LaMotte family was instrumental in the creation of what is now Hilton Head Hospital. David Adams died in 2012.

Noel was an accomplished artist, whose preferred media were watercolors and pastels. She was an active member of the Palette Club of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, of which she also served as President, and the Hilton Head Art League and the Bluffton Artists Association, both in South Carolina. Her paintings appeared in numerous art shows both in Pennsylvania and South Carolina. In 1997, one of her paintings was honored by the Historic Bethlehem Partnership, of which she had been a long-time supporter. In Bethlehem, she was also active in support of St. Luke’s Hospital, the American Heart Association and the Kemmerer Museum of Decorative Arts of which she served as its Board Chair. Upon moving to Kirkland Village she served as Chair of its Arts Committee as well as being an active participant in its Book Club and Current Events Club.

She and David Adams IV were avid fly-fishermen, and they pursued that sport in many parts of the world, from Canada to South America as well as in their beloved Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

She is survived by her children, Linda Miles Slonecker (Mark), Frederick LaMotte Miles and Jennifer Lee Miles (Julia Hollinger), step-daughters Cameron Adams Soroko (John), Lee Adams Klipstein (Ken) and grandchildren Ben, Christine, Aidan, Maya, Jonah and Lilly. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Ursula LaMotte and her sister in law, Beryl LaMotte. She survived two older brothers, Louis LaMotte and Peter LaMotte, M.D.
