Joseph E. Mattes, 80, of Palmer Township, passed away on Friday October 16, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Anderson Campus. He was the devoted husband of Carol (Silvoy) Mattes with whom he shared over 59 years of loving marriage. Born in Easton, he was the son of the late Robert Emmett and Helen (Sullivan) Mattes. Joseph was in the first graduating class from Notre Dame High School, class of 1958. He worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for over 43 years until retiring in 1999. His last ten years he was the VOMA for the Palmer Post Office. He was a parishioner of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Palmer Township, where he served as an usher and helped his wife who coordinated St. Jane Trips & Tours. Joe was a member of the Letter Carrier’s Association and the former FLEAS club in Easton. Joe was an avid New York Mets Fan. His favorite past time was watching his grandchildren grow up and enjoyed going to all their events.
Survivors: In addition to his loving wife Carol; sons Joseph E. Mattes, Jr. and his wife Grace of Hanover Township, and Michael S. Mattes and his wife Chrissy of Palmer Township ; grandchildren Julia, Patrick, Ryan, Mikayla and Zachary; brothers Charles “Chot” Mattes and his wife Sarah of Palmer Township, James “Jim” Mattes and his wife Patty of Palmer Township, sisters Eileen Golden of York and Jane Duane of Bethlehem Township; 3 nieces and 13 nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert E. Mattes, Jr.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday October 21, 2020 at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, 4049 Hartley Avenue, Easton, PA 18045. Calling hours will be on Tuesday evening from 6-8 P.M. and Wednesday morning from 9 A.M.-9:45 A.M at Cantelmi Long Funeral Home, 500 Linden Street Bethlehem, PA 18018. Face masks will be required for entry and social distancing regulations will apply. Burial will be at Holy Saviour Cemetery. A memory tribute may be placed at www.cantelmifuneralhome.com.
