Eugene J. Szabo, 82, of Fountain Hill, passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill, surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of Sandra (Lohman) Szabo for 61 years. Born in Bethlehem, he was the son of the late Eugene and Veronica (Kundek) Szabo. Gene played football for Liberty High School from 1955-56 and graduated from Bethlehem Vo-Tech in 1957. He honorably served his country with the US Navy from 1958-59. Gene coached the Fountain Hill Jr. and Sr. Legion baseball teams. The Sr. team won a league title, and the Jr. team was the state runner up in 1976. He was a parishioner of St. Ursula Catholic Church and a member of its Holy Name Society, where he served as past president. After his love of God, came his love and loyalty for his family and friends. Gene worked in the bakery industry for 38 years, for Schaibles, Maiers and Stroehman, until retiring in 1999. He then worked for several years for his best friend Dino Cantelmi. He was also a member of the former Fountain Hill American Legion, Post #406 and the Fountain Hill Republican Club. Gene loved his backyard, scratch off lottery tickets and was an avid New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys fan.
Survivors: In addition to his loving wife, Sandy, he will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Lori Karaska (Carl) of Nuangola and Denise Verrastro (Frank) of Fountain Hill; grandchildren, Rob Rodger, Hunter Verrastro and Reed Karaska; sister, Judy Klucsarits (Rich) of Bethlehem; sister-in-law, Frances J. Szabo of Egg Harbor, NJ; brother-in-law, Larry Lohman (Marie) of Sun City West, AZ. He is also survived by 4 nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brother Paul.
Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 in St. Ursula Catholic Church, 1300 Broadway Fountain Hill, followed by his burial at Holy Saviour Cemetery, Bethlehem. Calling hours will be held on Monday evening from 6-8 PM in Cantelmi Funeral Home, 1311 Broadway Fountain Hill, and also on Tuesday morning in church, from 9AM until the time of the Mass.
