Obituary

Rinalda "Nalda" Van Brunt Stevens passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of grace, generosity, and a life shaped by history, service, and love.

Born in San Antonio, Texas, on January 8, 1933, Nalda was the beloved daughter of Major General Rinaldo Van Brunt and Tip Van Brunt. Her early years were marked by international adventure and historical change. She spent part of her childhood in Zamboanga, Philippines, and later in Washington, D.C., during the outbreak of World War II. While her father served in World War II, Nalda and her family returned to San Antonio, where she attended St. Mary's Hall and forged lifelong friendships.

In 1945, her journey continued to Tegernsee, Germany, and later Frankfurt. It was there that she skipped a grade, became fluent in German and French, and witnessed the post-war reconstruction of Europe—experiences that instilled in her a profound worldliness and compassion. She graduated from the U.S. Army's Frankfurt High School before attending Goucher University in Baltimore and later transferring to the University of Texas, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in the prestigious Plan II Honors Program.

In 1954, Nalda made her debut at San Antonio's Fiesta as the Duchess of Lighthearted Merriment—a title as joyful and radiant as she was. Her international adventures continued when she moved to Brussels with her family as her father helped establish NATO. In 1955, she was presented at court to Queen Elizabeth II.

Back in Frankfurt, Nalda met Dick Stevens on a blind date. The two were married in November 1958 and shared a wonderful sixty-six years together, raising their family in Pennsylvania, including Reading, Gladwyne, Wyomissing, and finally Bethlehem.

Before marrying, Nalda worked as an analyst with the National Security Agency. Throughout her life, she remained committed to service and community. She was President of the Junior League of Reading, a founding member of Grace Presbyterian Church, and an elder at First Presbyterian Church. She taught Bethel Bible classes and served on the board of New Bethany Ministries, a youth-focused organization in Bethlehem.

Nalda was also a member of the Current Events Club and the Philadelphia Chapter of the Colonial Dames of America. She enjoyed bridge, golf, music, and travelling with her family. She was also a member of the Saucon Valley Country Club, Blooming Grove Hunting and Fishing Club, and Chevy Chase Club.

Nalda was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Dick, and their daughters Leslie Stevens, Page Knox (John), and Tip Walker (John). She was the adoring grandmother of Dixon, Will, Jamie Knox (Natasha), Jack, Van, Hank, and Charlie Walker. She was predeceased by her sister, Johanna Von Walter (Ned).

Nalda had the remarkable gift of making everyone feel like a close friend. Her warmth, wisdom, and vibrant spirit touched all who knew her. She believed deeply that she had lived a blessed life and carried that blessing forward to others through her kindness, faith, and generosity.

She will be dearly missed, lovingly remembered, and forever celebrated by her family, friends, and community.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, 4301 Hecktown Road, Bethlehem, PA 18020 on June 20, 2025, at 11:00 am. Nalda's services have been entrusted to Cantelmi Long Funeral Home, Bethlehem. A memory tribute may be placed at www.cantelmifuneralhome.com.
