Obituary

Joan Marie (Krem) Fedio, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025, at the age of 87, while under the care of Family Pillars Hospice and Saucon Valley Manor in Hellertown. Born in Bethlehem, Joan touched the lives of all who knew her through her gentle nature and compassion for both people and animals.

Joan's early life was spent in Bethlehem. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Krem and Florence Marie (Ponticelli) Krem. After graduating from Fountain Hill High School, Joan earned her nursing degree from St. Luke's School of Nursing.

Her dedication to healthcare defined her professional life. Joan began her career at St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill before moving to Potomac, Maryland, where she worked at Washington General Hospital. Her expertise led her to oversee the clinic at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda. Working alongside Dr. Anthony Fauci, Joan made significant contributions to medical research, including work on an HIV vaccine that was credited in the New England Journal of Medicine among other publications.

Beyond her professional life, Joan was a woman of many interests and strong Catholic faith. She had a natural gift for gardening, and both her indoor and outdoor spaces thrived under her care. Joan was an avid traveler and reader who found particular solace and beauty in poetry.

Survivors: She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Debbie of Tennessee, Valerie and her husband Bruce of Maryland, and Kim and her husband Chris of Massachusetts. Joan was Grammy to her grandchildren, Cameron, Matthew, and Michael. She is also survived by her brother, David, and his wife, Christine, of Quakertown, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph.

Services: Her burial services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Joan's services are entrusted to Cantelmi Long Funeral Home, Bethlehem, PA. A memory tribute may be placed at www.cantelmifuneralhome.com.
