Isabelle F.
Andrews
Jul 20, 1929 — Jan 27, 2025
Isabelle F. (Flood) Andrews, a beloved educator, family matriarch, and community pillar, passed away peacefully in Bethlehem, PA, on January 27, 2025, at age 95.
Isabelle is survived by her sister Dolores Flood Kolmel; children Isabelle (Jeff Anderson), Arthur (Patricia), Nancy (Steve Turbe), Mary (Gary Arne), Therese (Steve McGowan), William (Marla), and Frances (Jim Gallagher); 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur (Andy) Andrews, and her sister, Mary Mason.
Born on July 20, 1929, in the Bronx, NY, to the late William and Isabelle (Mackin) Flood, Isabelle's life was defined by her dedication to family, faith, and education.
The first in her family to attend college, Isabelle earned a BS in Physics in 1951, from her beloved Alma Mater, Seton Hill University. She began her career as an Engineer on high security defense projects, including her work at Brookhaven Labs on the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine. She married Andy in 1952, and together they raised seven children.
In the late 1960s, Isabelle returned to work as a math teacher in Orange County, NY, notably at Middletown High School, where she also served as Vice President of Middletown's Teachers Union, an AFT affiliate. Following Andy's death in 1976, Isabelle continued teaching, leaving a lasting impact on her students.
After retiring from teaching, Isabelle became a fearless and prolific traveler. Sometimes she travelled solo, driving her camper across the US and Canada, or carrying a single bag through Europe. In later years, she organized countless trips with her friends, especially Helen Flood, Grace Middlemas and Diane Markowitz, and with her extended family. Isabelle's grandchildren fondly remember cross-country train expeditions with Grandma from New York to San Francisco and on to Tacoma, Washington, to celebrate July 4th with the Mason family. Isabelle also enjoyed more than forty summer trips to Cape Cod.
In her 70s, Isabelle settled in Bethlehem, PA. She became a volunteer math teacher at Northampton County Prison. She became deeply involved at St. Anne Parish. She sang in the choir with her friends Alberta and Tom Siemiatoski, traveling once to Rome with the group to sing for the Pope. She was Treasurer and trip organizer for the parish 55+ Club. Most notably, she founded the parish's local chapter of St. Vincent DePaul, an organization whose mission is to help the poor and the homeless. Isabelle remained active with SVDP as President Emeritus right up until her death. She was honored with the "Spirit of St. Anne" award in 2019.
She enjoyed seeing her family, swimming, playing word games, and telling a good story.
