Obituary

Halfred C. "Hal" Smith, 97, of Moravian Hall Square in Nazareth and formerly of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2026. He was the devoted husband of the late Patricia L. "Pat" (Anderson) Smith, with whom he shared 65 loving years of marriage before her passing in 2016.

Born in Battle Creek, Michigan on April 25, 1929, Hal was the son of the late Hallie A. and Janice M. (Haines) Smith. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pat; his sister, LuAlice Maple Clayman; his triplet brothers, Gordon, Gerald, and Donald Smith; his son, Dean Gordon Smith; and granddaughter, Catherine Smith.

Hal was a graduate of Battle Creek Central High School and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1951. During his years at Michigan Tech, he excelled both academically and athletically. He played football for four years, serving as co-captain his junior year and earning MVP honors his senior year. He also held numerous leadership roles, including president of the local Blue Key Honor Society chapter, chairman of Winter Carnival, and president of the Kappa Delta Psi fraternity.

Following college, Hal began a distinguished 34-year career with Bethlehem Steel Corporation, retiring as Senior Manager of Manufacturing Operations at the Bethlehem Plant. Throughout his career, he represented Bethlehem Steel at international conferences and presented technical papers in cities across the United States, Europe, and Japan. Deeply respected in his field, Hal was an active member of the American Society for Metals since 1948, serving as chairman of the Lehigh Valley Chapter, receiving the Bradley Stoughton Award, and being elected a Fellow of ASM International for his contributions to the steel industry. Even after retirement, he continued consulting on steel projects throughout the United States, Brazil, and South Korea.

A man deeply committed to his faith and community, Hal dedicated countless hours of service to organizations throughout the Lehigh Valley. He served on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club of Bethlehem, the YMCA, the Hanover Township Planning Commission, and the Hanover Township Zoning Hearing Board. A faithful member of Central Moravian Church, he served in many leadership roles including the Board of Trustees, Board of Elders, Church Council, Mission Committee, and Sacristan Corp. He was also active with the Moravian Theological Seminary Board of Trustees, the Board of World Mission, the Moravian Archives Board, and the Moravian Church Foundation, where he served on the executive committee and traveled extensively throughout the world in support of the church's mission work. In addition, Hal served 32 years on the Board of Directors of Saucon Mutual Insurance Company, including 15 years as president.

Hal and Pat shared a remarkable love story that began during their junior year of high school and led to 65 years of marriage after they wed on September 9, 1951. Together they built a life centered around faith, family, and travel. Whether traveling for work, church missions, or treasured annual family vacations, Hal especially enjoyed the memories created with his loved ones throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Bermuda, Canada, and Italy.

Hal also had a lifelong passion for golf and enjoyed countless rounds over the years with friends from Bethlehem Steel, with Pat, and alongside family members on courses near and far.

Above all else, Hal cherished his family. He is survived by his loving children, LeeAnn Wise and her husband Mitchell, Dale Smith and his wife Karen, and Jason Smith; grandchildren, Kelsey Wise, Gregory Wise and his wife Allison, Michelle Shock, Stephanie, and Alessandra; and great-grandsons, Tanner, Jameson, and Jackson.
