Barbara J. (Ziff)
Brown
Oct 16, 1945 — Jul 1, 2025
Barbara Ziff Brown, a former educator, devoted family member, and active community participant, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on July 1, 2025. Born on October 16, 1945, in Paterson, New Jersey, Barbara's life was marked by her dedication to her family, her passion for learning, and a commitment to her community.
Barbara's journey as an educator began in Philadelphia and later took her to Brooklyn, where she inspired young minds as an elementary school teacher. Her natural ability to connect with children left a lasting impact on her students.
Predeceased by her parents, Charles Ziff and Helen Weinfeld Ziff, and her beloved husband, Dr. Jules P. "Sandy" Brown, Barbara's legacy lives on through her daughters, Heidi Brown, Carri J. Brown Fox, and Rebecca Brown Garcia, as well as her adored four grandchildren and her brother, Stanley Ziff.
Barbara served on the Board of Trustees of the Selwyn School in Denton, Texas for a decade, where she also volunteered while her children attended. Barbara was a founding member of the auxiliary board of Ann's Haven Hospice at a time when few in her community were familiar with the concept of hospice. Throughout her life, Barbara was an enthusiastic supporter of various nonprofit organizations, including those involved in social justice, environmental protection, and medical care for the street children of Calcutta, India.
Her intellectual curiosity and love for literature were reflected in her participation in the Charles Dickens Club and The Ariel Club, Art section. Barbara's daily routine included reading four newspapers, a testament to her intellectual engagement with the world around her.
Barbara's love for the simple pleasures in life, such as watching the wildlife in her backyard, savoring delicious foods, and cherishing moments with her daughters and grandchildren, was infectious. Her warmth and genuine concern for others touched nearly all who had the pleasure of meeting her.
