Abner Scott Merkel, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, at the age of 91. He was born on October 7, 1934, in Alburtis, Pennsylvania and left this world surrounded by the love of his family. Abner's life was a testament to his determination, kindness, and a deep commitment to his family and community.

Abner is survived by his devoted and loving wife, S. Jane (Portz) Merkel, with whom he shared a beautiful and enduring marriage of 48 years. Abner's legacy lives on through his children: Ryan Ott of Whitehall, John Merkel of Bethlehem, and Ann Merkel, along with her husband Matthew Burke of Lebanon Twp., NJ. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments and happiness.

Abner was a cherished grandfather to Gabrielle and Gavin Ott and Aidan Burke. He found great joy in being a part of their lives, offering guidance, support, and unwavering love. His stubborn spirit and warmth will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, who brought him endless joy and pride.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Myron Merkel and Pearl (Bogert) Merkel, as well as his siblings Jake, Henry, Arthur, Miriam (Follweiler), and Madeline (Seidel). Abner is survived by his siblings Hans and Maryann.

Abner graduated from Slatington High School in 1952 and immediately joined the US Navy serving aboard the USS Eaton Destroyer. Upon completing his service obligation, he worked his way through Moravian College obtaining a Bachelor's Degree and Lehigh University, Master's Degree, and became a math and science teacher, spending most of his time at Liberty High School and Freedom High School. He served on the Salisbury Township School Board for 16 years as well as the Lehigh County Vo-Tech Board.

Abner was also a hard-working entrepreneur, displaying a keen sense of business acumen and creativity. His determined spirit allowed him to explore new ventures and contribute to his community. He ventured into many small businesses, growing them and eventually taking over the ownership of Willow Park Center where he spent a lot of his time. He was always trying to make things better for other people.

Abner's love for family and determination were his greatest gifts. He instilled hard work into his children as a way of life.
