Carmela DelGrosso, 94, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital, Anderson Campus. She was born on September 3, 1924 in Colle Sannita, Italy, the daughter of Giuseppenicola and Lucia (Zeolla) Mascia. In November, 1954, she married Antonio DelGrosso in Foiano di Val Fortore, Italy, and traveled to the United States to join him and begin a new life. She arrived in New York aboard the Andrea Doria in 1955. One of seven siblings, she was the only member of her family to immigrate to the United States, and became a U.S. citizen in 1967. She was a talented needleworker and seamstress, and worked for several years at the Lehigh Valley Silk Mills in Fountain Hill, which is now on the National Registry of Historic Places. She lived in the same house in South Bethlehem for 60 years, and was a beloved member of a close-knit neighborhood. She also loved to cook for her family, and often shared her favorite dishes with neighbors and friends. Vegetable and flower gardening was another passion and pastime she enjoyed, often trading plant cuttings and seeds with others who shared her passion. Her greatest love was spending time with and caring for her family, devoting much of her later years helping to raise her six grandchildren, which were her greatest joy. She was also very devoted to her Catholic faith, and was a member of the Italian church, Our Lady of Pompeii of the Most Holy Rosary, Bethlehem, and often attending nearby Holy Ghost Church.
