Donald Mongeon Obituary

 

Donald Lionel Mongeon, 86, of Bethlehem, PA peacefully passed away Saturday February 4, 2023 at Lehigh Valley Health System-Muhlenberg Hospital with family by his side.  He leaves behind his two daughters; Jeannine Mongeon and her husband Richard d'Anjou of Minneola, FL; and Sharon Peer and her husband Jason Peer of Baltimore, MD; a sister Muriel Beaulieu of Northbridge, MA; and 6 grandchildren Simon, Margot, Owen, Lucas, Reid Peer; and Juliette d'Anjou.  He was predeceased by his wife of 42 years Shirley Mongeon (Brisk); his sister Blanche Kidd; and his sister Constance Aubin.
 
The son of Leo and Loretta (Landry), Donald was born in Northbridge, MA on March 3, 1936.  He spent his childhood in Northbridge, attended St. Peter’s Parish School, and graduated from Northbridge High School in 1954. Donald enrolled in Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA.  His college years were interrupted with time spent in the US Army, where he served as an Acquisition Radar Repairman. He specialized in ordinance electronics for the Ajax-Hercules surface to air missile and was stationed at the White Sands Missile Base in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  After graduating from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1962 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, he began his career with the Bethlehem Steel Corporation at the Lackawanna Plant in Buffalo, NY.  Donald later transferred to the Bethlehem Steel Plant in Bethlehem, PA. He held several positions with Bethlehem Steel including Metallurgical Engineer and Manager of Quality Assurance. He retired in 1997 after 35 years of service. He continued to be active in his profession as a member of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and serving as a consultant for NUCOR Steel.
 
Donald was a talented woodworker and handcrafted several pieces of furniture for the family that will be treasured.  He enjoyed traveling, gardening and golf.  He was an active member at Moravian Village where he served as Secretary for the Resident Council. He served as a Trustee for many years at First Presbyterian Church, and later at Grace Church of Bethlehem.
 
A memorial service is planned for Friday February 10, 2023 at 2:00pm, Grace Church of Bethlehem, 521 E. Locust Street Bethlehem, PA 18018.
 
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia Chapter, 321 Norristown Road, Suite 260, Ambler, PA 19002.
