Joseph Chivinsky Obituary

Joseph Chivinsky, 88, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2024, while in the tender care of Lehigh Valley Hospice, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 18, 1935, in Mahanoy City, Joseph's life was a testament to hard work, innovation, and devotion to his loved ones.

Joseph, affectionately known to his friends and family as Joe, was a proud graduate of Mahanoy City High School. His thirst for knowledge and commitment to education led him to earn a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University, followed by a master’s from Lehigh University. He began working towards his PhD at Carnegie Mellon University, demonstrating his lifelong love for learning. Joe honorably served his country in the United States Air force.

Joe's professional life was marked by dedication and excellence. He worked for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation as a member of the Loop Course, and later for Allegheny Ludlum Corp., where he made significant contributions until his retirement, as a Metallurgical engineer. Not one to rest on his laurels, Joe continued to share his expertise as a consultant for the Performance Review Institute. His outstanding contributions to the field of hardness testing were recognized with the prestigious Anthony DeBellis award. Joe held nine patents, a testament to his ingenuity and forward-thinking mind.

Throughout his career, Joe was an active member of several professional organizations, including ASTM, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and ASM International. His peers respected him for his knowledge and his willingness to lend a helping hand.

Joe's personal life was filled with the same warmth and dedication he brought to his professional endeavors. He was a beloved husband to Lorraine (Smicker) Chivinsky for 61 years, a loving father to his son Joseph Chivinsky and his wife Kim, and his daughter Karen Marbaise. He was a doting grandfather to Jacob, Kathryn, and Heather. Joe's sisters, Mildred, and Mary Pat, held a special place in his heart, as did his late siblings Joanne Haley and Francis Chivinsky. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ann Chivinsky.

A man of faith, Joe was a devoted member of Notre Dame of Bethlehem Catholic Church. His hardworking nature was balanced by his love for his family, which was at the core of everything he did. Joe found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as fishing, which provided him with moments of tranquility and reflection.

Those who knew Joe will remember him for his great sense of humor and his humble demeanor. He was a loving and friendly presence in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His ability to bring laughter and light into any room was one of his most endearing qualities.
