John J. Kachmar, Jr. Obituary

John J. Kachmar, Jr. born on February 26, 1948, in Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2024, in his hometown of Bethlehem. He was a dedicated public servant, decorated veteran, and beloved family man. He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his community, his country, and his loved ones.

John grew-up in Bethlehem where he started his life of service attending St Annes Church and becoming an Eagle Scout in Post 6 where he made many life-long friends. John attended Notre Dame High School, spent a year in a Catholic seminary in Philadelphia, and then completed his studies at Notre Dame. After volunteering for the Marines and bravely serving in the Vietnam War as a rifleman in the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, where he received two Purple Hearts and several recognitions for his valor, John returned home to continue his education, graduating from Moravian College. John's experiences in combat were part of the fabric of his character, though he spoke little of them, embodying the quiet strength of a true hero.

John's professional life was marked by a series of impactful roles. He began by leading the local job training organization, Manpower, which was instrumental in shaping the future of the workforce in his community. His dedication to public service continued in Washington, D.C., where he served as Chief of Staff for Congressman Don Ritter, representing the Lehigh Valley's 15th Congressional District for a decade.  His career then transitioned to public administration, where he served as the County Administrator of Lehigh County, becoming the trusted "go-to" guy for the county's needs.

John's expertise in city and county management led him to become an esteemed member of the International Cities and Counties Association for 28 years. His last role before retirement was as the City Manager of Johns Creek, just outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Upon returning to Bethlehem, he continued his lifelong passion for public service by consulting on governmental issues and running for Mayor in 2021. He also devoted himself to assisting fellow veterans with healthcare and VA benefits, a cause close to his heart.

John's legacy is carried on by his his long-time partner, Tracie Barnes, and his loving family: his son, Tim Kachmar; his daughter, Elizabeth Burkhard; his mother, Irene Kachmar; his sister, Janice Miller; his brother, Larry Kachmar; and his six cherished grandchildren, Nick, Devin and Maddie Kachmar, and Jack, Charlie and Isaac Burkhard. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, including Robert, Larry Jr., and Sammy Kachmar, Ryan and Matt Miller, and Caitlin Miller Harman, who will all miss his guidance and affection.

Those who knew John describe him as loving and kind, a man who led by example and inspired others through his actions and words. His interests were as varied as his career, but all were underpinned by a deep-seated desire to serve others. In the Lehigh Valley and beyond, he shared his wisdom generously, leaving a lasting impact on many lives.

John's presence was a constant in the community, often seen at local cigar venues where he enjoyed camaraderie and conversation. His ability to connect with people from all walks of life made him a cherished figure in the area.
